Best Way to Start Your Day Energize and Have a Productive Day

“This is a wonderful day. I’ve never seen this one before.”
Maya Angelou

Untitled DesignEvery day is a new day, seize it with passion and all the energy that you can muster. It may not turn out as planned but it always gives us something special to be thankful for. One of the things I do to start my day is drink something warm. When I was a little kid my Grandma told me that drinking something hot in the morning like a warm cocoa is like a comfort to the tummy, like it’s giving it a rescue with a warm hug. And that’s how I always see it in the morning getting warm hugs and I know I will make it through the day.

We all love to be warmed up in the cold or chilly morning and to some it helps to kick them up little bit like with coffee and they just go through the day like in a rollercoaster ride and come out hyped or drained at the end of the ride. I am not a fan of rollercoaster though, not something that you would want to do every single day. And that’s the same with my morning drink I’d rather have something easy and comfortable to make it through the day, every single day. Just cruising naturally and yet ever mindful as the day unfolds.

I was not a coffee drinker but free coffee at work with a variety of many choices, lattes, cappuccinos, mocha etc.. it’s like a buffet you just want to try them all. Until I met my husband Dave, he prepares my coffee every single day made of light roast coffee bean with MCT oil, heavy cream and dash of vanilla. Yes no sugar, it doesn’t taste like the Caramel Macchiato that I used to order in Starbucks but I know it is the better and healthier way. Then at the start of this year I decided to stop taking coffee just to find out if not having it in my system will give me a better sleep at night. I know, I know, some of you drink tons of coffee in a day and are luckily sleeping at night like a baby. But every person’s body is different and it never hurts to do a little personal bio hack with just taking out coffee in the equation.

So what is in my morning drink?

  • Almond Milk – It is my base as I want it a bit creamy but you can use just hot water. I have a history of hyperthyroidism and still is trying to keep my hormones at the normal range. I incorporate non-dairy and gluten free in my diet. I avoid using dairy milk as cow’s milk may:
    • have growth hormones especially if they are not organic or grass-fed
    • and even if they are organic it may be high in estrogen
    • pasteurization process decrease many of the nutrients, modify the protein of dairy and can lead to greater increase in food allergies.
    • homogenization process changes the physical structure of milk fat and because of this might alter the health properties of milk

  • Chocolate Latte by Organic Traditions or Dark Hot Chocolate by Equal Exchange –  On weekdays I do Organic Traditions because it’s loaded with superfoods such as:
    • Ashwaganda – and adaptogenic herb commonly called Indian ginseng, winter cherry and somnifera root. It has many health benefits and the following are just few of them:
      • improve thyroid function
      • treat adrenal fatigue
      • reduce anxiety and depression
      • increase stamina and endurance
      • helps increase muscle strength
      • prevent and treat cancer
      • reduce brain cell degeneration
      • stabilize blood sugar
      • lower cholesterol
      • boost immunity
      • helps improve sexual function & fertility
    • Probiotics Bacillus Coagulans – Helps in the relief or improvement in the symptoms of constipation, painful defecation, incomplete evacuation and abdominal pain. This probiotic is able to regularise bowel movements.
    • Cardamom – Has antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps in protecting your heart from elevated cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. It also helps manage diabetes and lower the risk of cancer and liver toxicity. It is used as a carminative for digestive problems as well. It helps alleviate oral health problems like cavities and bad breath.  The USDA Food Data Central, cardamom is a source of minerals such as iron, magnesium, selenium, zinc, and manganese. Other nutrients include calcium, potassium, the B-vitamin pyridoxine, and vitamin C. It also contains small amounts of protein, dietary fiber, and key fatty acids.
    • Nutmeg – A spice that helps relieve pain, regulate digestion, improve sleep, and boost brain health. It also helps relieve stress and lower LDL(bad) cholesterol levels. It extends its ability to provide hepatic protection, relieve depression, regulate blood pressure levels, and alleviate oral conditions.
    • Cinnamon – Used as medicine in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries.Known for its benefits linked to digestion and gastrointestinal complaints, cinnamon has long been used as a home remedy for heartburn, indigestion, and nausea.
    • Coconut Milk -A great source of magnesium, copper, iron, and manganese, as well as vitamin C, folate, selenium, and other trace minerals. That being said, this milk is also high in certain saturated fats, which is why it needs to be consumed in moderation.
    • Cacao -Health benefits of cocoa include relief from high blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, constipation, diabetes, bronchial asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, and various neurodegenerative diseases. It helps reduce the risk of cancer and improve cardiovascular as well as brain health. It also helps in treating copper deficiency, quick woundhealing, and skincare. It has mood-enhancing properties and exerts protective effects against neurotoxicity.

On weekends my husband prepares my hot dark chocolate from Equal Exchange and the health benefits of dark chocolate is more than the regular or milk chocolate such as: protects skin health, antioxidant rich superfood, improves blood pressure, better cognitive function, good for overall cholesterol profile, improve heart health, potential cancer prevention & protection from disease causing free radicals.

  • Foti (He-Shou Wu) – a Chinese herbal medicine that’s derived from a plant that primarily grows in China, Japan, Tibet and Taiwan. Has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to support liver and kidney health, fight various effects of aging, and “nourish the heart and calm the spirit.” Here are some of its main health benefits:
    • Anti-inflammatory effects
    • Can improve skin health
    • May promote hair growth and reduce gray hair
    • Relieves constipation
    • Can help improve speed quality
    • May help increase estrogen and manage menopause symptoms
    • May fight age related memory problems
  • Collagen Protein – Our body’s collagen production naturally begins to slow down as we age. We can thank this degenerative process for signs of aging, such as wrinkles, sagging skin and joint pains due to weaker or decreased cartilage. Other lifestyle factors — like eating a diet high in sugar, smoking and high amounts of sun exposure — also contribute to depleting collagen levels. The Collagen i use is made from bone broth of grass-fed cows. Here are the health benefits of Collagen from bone broth of grassfed cow:
    • improve health of skin and hair
    • reduce joint pains and degeneration
    • helps remedy leaky gut
    • boost metabolism, muscle mass and energy output
    • strengthens nail, hair and teeth
    • improves liver health
    • protects cardiovascular health
  • MCT Oil -Increases energy, endurance, metabolism, satiety, supports the gut and boost brain function.

It may seem that my weekday drink is loaded with ingredients and it may take time to prepare but not really. All i do is warm up the milk, add the cacao powder, collagen powder, foti powder and a drizzle of MCT oil and blend it with a frother and I’m good to go. During the start of pandemic I woke up as early as 4am and was usually out the door by 5am and I’m as energized as a person who is a coffee drinker loaded with caffeine but I’m caffeine free or at a very minimum amount and instead i am loaded of superfood rich in nutrients that helps me to get things done and stay focus in accomplishing my responsibilities and goals.

Some of this superfood such as Ashwaganda and Foti of which are Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicine may be best to consult with your doctor or functional medicine doctor (preferred), for the dosage or continued use if you are pregnant or have underlying chronic health conditions.

How you face the new day tells a lot of how your day will go, always meet it with zest and optimism. I would like to end this with a quote from John Lennon,

When you do something noble and beautiful and nobody noticed, do not be sad. For the sun every morning is a beautiful spectacle and yet most of the audience still sleeps.
